Study sites - Veszprém
We are following a free-living population of several hundreds of house sparrows in the Zoo of Veszprém in northwestern Hungary since 2004. The Zoo is located in a spectacular valley amongst a pine-wood on the cliffs. Here we study sparrows all year, including captures and observations during autumn and winter, and monitoring the pairs that breed in nest boxes provided by us during spring and summer. Of course, our sparrows also nest at natural nest sites, mainly in the roofs of the shelters for zoo animals - these nests are often quite difficult to access. We also have two outdoor aviaries for sparrows at a remote site of the zoo closed to visitors.
